What Are the Black Stains on Your Roof?

​Homeowners often think that these stains are mold or mildew, but discoloration is often from algae. Specifically, blue-green algae known as Gloeocapsa Magma
 
Algae travels by wind and in the air, spreading from roof to roof. The roof provides an ideal location for algae to grow considering that it often the most host and humid spot on your house.
 
In some situations, the black stains on your roof might be from your asphalt shingles starting to break down and the base layer of the shingles is bleeding through.

​Why it is important to remove Algae?

Algae can cause damage to your home. Shingles today are largely made of limestone and that is a food source for algae. The algae will eat away the limestone and will then allow water to get onto your roof and clean lead to leaks, mold, and mildew inside of your house.
 
Another type of algae that can grow is Fire Moss. When the moss grows to mature size it can push up the shingles allowing the weather to invade underneath causing major damage to your roof and home.
